Last week I mentioned that the theme for the month of November is, “Let every heart prepare Him room” as we look forward to the advent season. (And don’t forget to check out this month’s mini-retreat guide in that post as well!) This month we’re making room.
To help us look more closely at our life rhythms and to invite God into them, our practice this month is to pray our day.
This means taking a little time each morning (before the day ramps up) to look at your calendar and to-do list with God.
Try these steps:
Get out your calendar and/or to-do list for the day.
Take a moment to ask God what He thinks about your planned day. Is there something to change (add or delete or rearrange)? Take some space to listen and if something comes to mind, jot it down.
Once your schedule and to-dos feels set, invite God into your day (we know God is always with us, but He doesn’t force His way in. Invite Him to go with you).
Use your imagination to picture each part of your day, each task of your schedule, and God with you in it. Notice where He is in proximity to you. Notice what His facial expression looks like.
Thank God for going with you and express your openness to His voice and guidance along the way.
BONUS:
Take a moment before bed to reflect back on the day. Did you notice God with you? Did He speak to you about your day and it’s fullness? What might He want you to know about tomorrow? Is there anything to put down? Anything to pick up? If something comes to mind, take note on tomorrow’s calendar or to-do list.
Thank God for being with you today. And ask for the grace to see Him more clearly and hear from Him as you pray your day tomorrow.
And may you encounter the God who loves you as you make space in your schedule and your soul.
